What is a defensive tackle?
A defensive tackle is a defensive lineman who typically aligns across from the opposition center or guards.
A 'nose tackle' is a type of defensive tackle who lines up directly over the center.
They are often the heaviest player on the field.
What are the responsibilities of a defensive tackle?
Defending the run
Against the run, the defensive tackle attempts to beat their blocker and make the tackle themselves, or occupy one or sometimes two blockers, allowing other defensive players to make tackles.
Defending the pass
More athletic versions of defensive tackles have emerged in the modern era, relying increasingly on speed and agility to defeat blockers rather than relying solely on brute strength. Aaron Donald, and more recently, Chris Jones and Jalen Carter are excellent examples of such players.
These players have transformed the perception of the position from being primarily run-stuffers to becoming key disruptors in the passing game.
What skills does a good defensive tackle need?
A defensive tackle needs to have the mass, strength, and leverage to occupy blockers.
The best pass-rushing defensive tackles need to have the strength, agility, and pass-rush moves to beat blockers, and the burst to close ground between them and the quarterback before the opposition passer can release the ball.
