NFL safety: What position is it and how does it work?

An NFL safety is no longer just the last line of defense. In the modern game, they are chess pieces, versatile playmakers, and some of the most important players on the field.

DAZN NFL news looks at what a safety is and how the position has evolved over time.

What is an NFL safety?

Historically, safeties were bulky, strong, and more reminiscent of linebackers in terms of their physical stature.

In recent decades, they have traded size and strength for speed and agility, as NFL offenses have become increasingly pass-happy compared to years past.

While generally versatile, some safeties still specialise in a role where they are tasked with playing close to the line of scrimmage. These are often labelled 'strong safeties.'

The safeties that typically align in a deeper role, focusing on limiting opposition passing plays, are sometimes labeled 'free safeties'.

What are the responsibilities of a safety?

The role of a safety varies from one scheme to another, but all will be responsible for stopping both the run and pass to a certain extent.

The best safeties can handle both jobs, covering receivers, running backs, and tight ends like a cornerback, while taking on blocks and making tackles like a linebacker.

Occasionally, safeties will also be tasked with blitzing the quarterback.
