There will be no undefeated teams in Division I men's basketball.
In a stunner, No. 20-ranked Miami (Ohio) lost its first game of the season to UMass 87-83 in the Mid-American Conference quarterfinals in Cleveland. Now, Miami's NCAA Tournament hopes hang in the balance.
With 29 seconds remaining, UMass' Daniel Hankins-Sanford made a layup to break a tie, and the Minutemen never looked back from there to cap off a game that saw 12 lead changes and 10 ties.
Miami had the game well in hand. They had a 69-58 lead with 8:11 remaining in the game. Then, UMass rallied back with a 13-2 run. Jayden Ndjigue nailed a 3-pointer to tie the game at 71.
Leonardo Bettiol led UMass (17-15) with 25 points, Marcus Banks added 18, and Ndjigue scored 16. Brant Byers led Miami with 17 points.
For Miami (31-1), they have to leave their tourney hopes in the hands of the NCAA Tournament Committee. Many inside college basketball have felt that Miami's strength of schedule and being in the MAC would hinder their chances of getting in the Big Dance if they didn't win the conference tournament.
"Our guys have earned the right, in my opinion, to play in the NCAA tournament," Miami coach Travis Steele told reporters after the game.
