The Men's NCAA Tournament Field started at 68 teams on Sunday. On Tuesday night, the first two games of the First Four took place in Dayton, Ohio.
It was the second game of the night that provided all the drama as Texas beat NC State 68-66 as sixth-year senior Tramon Mark nailed a step-back with 1.1 seconds left for his 16th and 17th points of the game to secure the victory and advance to the Round of 64 in the West Region, where they'll face No. 6 BYU in the first round on Thursday in Portland, Oregon.
"This one is definitely [best] for me," Mark said after the game. "The way the game was going, the way the game felt, we had a big lead, they started making some shots. And then I was able to silence the crowd with a big shot like that."
In the first game of the evening, in a battle of No. 16 seeds, Howard thwarted a late rally to defeat UMBC 86-83 to win their first-ever NCAA Tournament game. Howard had things well in control, being up 11 points with two minutes to go. UMBC closed the lead to two.
Bryce Harris slammed the door on the game with a turnaround jumper with 13 seconds left to move the lead back to four, sending Howard to the 64-team field to face the No. 1 seed Michigan in the Midwest Region on Thursday.
"Being on this stage and being able to check this box, it's the only game going on right now, and the whole college basketball world, I'm pretty sure, was locked in on this,"Howard Head Coach Kenny Blakeney said. "So, what a wonderful accomplishment."
