On paper, Saturday's WBC middleweight title showdown between titleholder Carlos Adames and Austin Williams promises all action from the Caribe Royale in Orlando, live globally and exclusively on DAZN.
Out of Adames' 24 career wins, 18 have come by knockout. For the challenger, he's got 20 career wins with 13 by knockout. The man known as "Ammo" sees what everyone else is seeing come fight night.
“The technical side will be something that people can appreciate down the line,” Williams said on Wednesday. “How explosive and action-packed this fight will be the main focus for a long time. Everything you can imagine that cuts with action; if that’s blood, cuts, guts, KOs, explosive energy, whatever comes to your mind when you think about an action-packed fight, that’s what it’s going to be."
Originally, Adames and Williams were scheduled to fight at the end of January. But the day before the fight, Adames (24-1, 18 KOs) was forced to pull out due to severe dehydration. Williams (20-1, 13 KOs) stayed on the show and beat late replacement Wendy Toussaint by unanimous decision.
To Adames' credit, he could have not fought Williams and moved on elsewhere. Instead, Adames took the fight on Saturday. Williams felt something was going on before the fight got canceled. But he is ready to make the most of the opportunity that has been given to him this weekend.
“I knew something was wrong in New York," Williams said. "They had a bunch of fighters coming to do tests, and I didn’t see Adames in the room. As soon as I got off the scales, Eddie [Hearn] was right there waiting, and I things like that don’t happen unless there’s some news.
“At the end of the day, it was still a move from his team to get that extra time and preparation. They got to watch me fight, but there’s advantages and disadvantages from both sides. This is my show now at the end of the day, and the fight is bigger now; it’s all worked out, and I can only be grateful."
