The biggest fights in boxing have long been predicted for Liverpool’s Andrew Cain, and the explosive puncher can take one step closer to that platform when he faces Alejandro Gonzalez this weekend.
Cain’s battle with the wily Mexican will serve as eliminator for WBC honours at bantamweight, and with Cain’s Everton Red Triangle colleague, Nick Ball, headlining against Brandon Figueroa in the main event , Cain knows a win will soon afford him the same spotlight.
After 15 fights, Cain is on the verge of getting to the spot he has cherished for a lengthy period, and with a reputation as one of British boxing’s biggest punchers, his path to this position has been an entertaining one filled with explosive finishes.
After securing titles at a variety of levels, and possessing wins over the likes of Ashley Lane and Charlie Edwards, the latter being a former world champion, Cain is ready to test himself against the biggest threats in the sport and his workmanlike approach to boxing is evident ahead of this huge opportunity.
“This is just another step to where I want to be, like all of my fights,” said Cain during an exclusive sitdown with DAZN News just days before his fight with Gonzalez.
“Every fight is important because I wouldn't be here today if I didn't treat them all the same. To get where I want to get to then they all must mean everything to me.”
Within the tight knit Liverpool boxing community, Cain’s talents and power have been well known for a number of years, dating back to when Cain was an enthusiastic amateur fighting in the same gym he occupies today.
Making his debut back in 2015, a time when the likes of the Smith brothers, Tony Bellew, and Derry Mathews were the faces of Liverpool boxing, Cain was considered a fighter with a bright future and over a decade on, he is close to realising what those closest to him have long known.
“I know there’s people who say that others don’t believe in them, but I’ve always believed in myself, and I’ve also just wanted to keep proving myself right. I just know that I have to keep doing what I’ve been doing and enjoy myself whilst I’m doing it as well.”
With Gonzalez highly likely to be the final obstacle before a world title shot, several fighters could be in the frame to provide Cain with his sternest ahead of becoming world champion. Takumi Inoue, the brother of pound-for-pound superstar, Naoya, holds the WBC crown and that is the belt that Cain desires.
“I want the WBC belt. I want to defend it as much as I can and I want to have a proper long title reign. I want to be in this sport for a few more years so becoming world champion and staying there against the best fighters is a big target for me.”
