Canelo Alvarez has suggested that he would be open to a bout with Hamzah Sheeraz in the latter's native United Kingdom.
But the Mexican believes the Briton should face IBF champion Osleys Iglesias first, with the winner then poised to fight him.
Sheeraz earned the vacant WBO super-middleweight strap against Alem Begic last month to secure his spot at the summit.
Canelo meanwhile faces WBC champion Christian Mbilli in September, but admits he would be open to a Sheeraz away day.
“We'll see [but] why not?” he was quoted by The Ring. “I have my fight, and he just had his fight, we'll see. But why not?
“[But] I think [Sheeraz and Iglesias] need to fight each other, and then I fight the winner. That's the smart thing they can do.
"We all need to earn what we deserve, and they need to earn it. I’m not saying they don’t deserve it, [because] they deserve it.
"That’s why they are champions or number ones or whatever. But they need to fight each other, and then after my fight, we’ll see."
It's been a white whale for British fight fans ever since he reached the summit - but might Canelo Alvarez finally come to them?
There's been links over the years, talks of a clash here and there. But there has been nothing concrete for the Mexican - until now.
Chris Eubank Jr. may be a stadium-filling name, but Hamzah Sheeraz has a world title, and that is the currency Canelo prizes.
His suggestion Osleys Iglesias should be next for the star suggests a desire to not exert himself more than he has to in the ring.
But whether that is the path Sheeraz opts to pursue remains to be seen. After all, the Briton is the man with the strap right now.
