Following a dominant points win over Gennadiy Golovkin in September, the Mexican revealed that he needed to tend to the above injury and was unsure about when he would be back in the ring.

But now it looks like he will be able to fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend, something which has become a tradition for Alvarez. 

"My scars are already closed. I'm doing my therapy very well, so I think it won't stop me so much. My fights are always in May or September. I think I'll be ready for May again," Alvarez told bet365. 

“I think so [to fight on Cinco De Mayo weekend in May]. At the beginning the doctor had told me that I had to spend four weeks with the cast without moving it after the surgery, when he came in and saw inside everything I had and what he did to me, he said that it was better than we expected, that it should be only seven days with the cast, then remove the stitches and start the rehabilitation, right now I've been two weeks.”

Canelo has been one of boxing's most active fighters as of late fighting six times in a 21-month stretch and during that time became the undisputed champion at super middleweight.

It was no surprise that at some point his body would need a prolonged rest, but with a target date set for an in-ring return, it's likely that Alvarez will try and arrange a rematch with WBA light heavyweight Dmitry Bivol who the 32-year-old failed to beat earlier this year.
