Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will look to reclaim his throne as undisputed super middleweight champion when he takes on William Scull tonight, live on DAZN Pay-Per-View.

The Mexican superstar will cross paths with the Cuban, who inherited his IBF title after he was forced to vacate it in favour of a bout with Edgar Berlanga last September.

Canelo effectively veered Scull at the time, avoiding the mandatory challenger bout, but retained his other major titles in the division with the WBA, WBC and WBO belts.

Now, he has the opportunity to add the fourth and final piece back into his crown, and reaffirm his status as one of the century's greatest pound-for-pound superstar fighters.

Here, DAZN News assesses Alvarez’s recent form going into the Scull showdown – which suggests the 34-year-old could take some stopping this weekend in Riyadh.

Edgar Berlanga - September 2024

Alvarez remained the unified super middleweight world champion after earning a unanimous decision in his last outing nine months ago.

The Mexican knocked down Berlanga in the third round in front of more than 20,000 fans at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The four-weight world champion stayed in control throughout to inflict the first defeat of Berlanga’s career and mark Mexican Independence Day celebrations with his fifth straight win.

The fight was scored 118-109 by two judges and 117-110 by the third in favour of Alvarez, who retained his WBA, WBC and WBO titles.

His record improved to 62-2-2 and he remarked afterwards: “I’m the best fighter in the world. It means a lot.

“It’s an honour for me to represent my country on this day. I feel proud about it.”

All told, it was a hugely impressive statement from Alvarez and a ringing endorsement of his pedigree as he prepares to face Scull on Saturday.

Jaime Munguia - May 2024

This bout saw Alvarez beat his fellow Mexican by a unanimous points decision to retain his WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF super middleweight titles.

Munguia was dropped for the first time in his career in the fourth round when he was caught by a right uppercut before Alvarez went on to win on points.

The judges scored the fight 117-110, 116-111 and 115-112.

Previously unbeaten Munguia had won all his previous 43 fights, with 34 being by knockout, but Alvarez proved too strong.

“I have 12 rounds to win the fight and I did,” said Alvarez afterwards.

“I did really good, and I feel proud about it. He's strong but I think he's a little slow. I could see every punch.

“That's why I'm the best. I'm the best fighter right now, for sure.”

Jermell Charlo - October 2023

Alvarez defended his undisputed super-middleweight title by beating American Charlo on points in another Sin City outing.

The Mexican secured a unanimous 119-108, 118-109 and 118-109 win to retain his WBO, WBC, WBA and IBF belts at the T-Mobile Arena.

Alvarez knocked Charlo down in the seventh round on the way to a 60th win in 64 fights.

“I'm the best. Who's better? Nobody can beat this Canelo,” he said.

Alvarez dropped Charlo for only the second time in his career with an overhand right followed by an uppercut.

He added: “We know he's a great fighter. He knows how to move in the ring and we worked that in the gym for three months.

“Three months in the mountains without my family, without everything.

“But I still love boxing. Boxing made me the person I am today. Boxing is my life.”

John Ryder - May 2023

Alvarez beat Britain’s John Ryder in front of 50,000 raucous Mexican fans on a historic night in Guadalajara.

The Mexican champion defended his undisputed super middleweight crown on points despite a spirited display by Ryder at Estadio Akron.

It was a sweet victory on home soil for Alvarez, who dominated the fight and dropped Ryder in the fifth round before the Londoner steadied himself and fought gamely.

After eight months out of the ring following surgery on his left hand, there were no signs of any effects of Alvarez's injury.

Two judges scored the bout 118-109 and the other 120-107 to Alvarez.

“I'm happy with the fight. I won and I'm happy people had a great fight,” Alvarez reflected.

“He's a strong fighter. I knew that; I'm not surprised about it.”

Gennadiy Golovkin - September 2022

Alvarez dominated Golovkin over 12 rounds to retain his undisputed super middleweight crown.

For Alvarez this success marked a returned to winning ways after his move up to light heavyweight ended in defeat against WBA champion Dmitry Bivol in his previous outing in May 2022.

That was just the second loss of his career but the Mexican returned to winning ways in style on home ground against Golovkin.

It was the third encounter in Las Vegas between the modern-day greats with Alvarez claiming a second win following a controversial draw in the first bout.

After withstanding a fightback from Golovkin in the later rounds, all three judges were in agreement, scoring it 116-112, 115-113, 115-113 for Alvarez.

“Thank you my friend, we gave the fans three great fights,” said the Mexican afterwards.

They shared a warm embrace after the fight, despite their rivalry turning sour in the four-year wait for the trilogy encounter, which saw Alvarez retain the IBF, WBA , WBO and WBC titles.
