Now, when asked whether his son may reverse course and consider a third bout if he gains revenge, his father has played down any prospect.

"No, no, no," he told talkSPORT. "He's going back down. That's his goal. I think after this fight, there won't be a trilogy. I honestly believe that.

"God willing, after this fight, he'll drop back down to 147, and then he will progress at that level. That's his goal, to be [welterweight champion]."

The senior Benn was a two-weight champion in his own right during a glittering career, with his son keen to follow in his footsteps with a title.

Both Mario Barrios and Lewis Crocker have been namechecked as potential opponents for the star as and when he returns to the division.
