As an early, high-profile signing of Zuffa Boxing, Conor Benn has pressure on him to deliver an electric performance this weekend.
Benn will have his chance Saturday night when he fights former world champion Regis Prograis at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. The welterweight bout will serve in chief support fight to the Tyson Fury vs. Arslanbek Makhmudov headliner.
Benn (24-1, 14 KOs) is coming off the splashiest win of his career as he thoroughly outboxed Chris Eubank Jr. in their November rematch, which was held at the same Tottenham Hotspur venue as this weekend’s host. Meanwhile, Prograis (30-3, 24 KOs), a former super lightweight titleholder, enters this bout having scored a unanimous decision over Joseph Diaz back in August.
Will Benn make good on ‘The Destroyer’ ring moniker and wipe Prograis out? Or will Prograis prove too gritty and seasoned of an opponent in an upset win, spoiling Benn’s Zuffa Boxing debut? DAZN News analyzes who has the edge heading into this weekend.
At his best, Conor Benn is calculated, stabbing to the body and lining up opponents for stinging one-two combinations that split the guard.
The boxing world got to this high degree of sweet science skill from Benn in his rematch with Chris Eubank Jr. last fall without Benn getting overzealous or erratic. When Benn keeps his composure, while still fighting with fire, he is tenacious and hard to beat.
That is the challenge for Regis Prograis who is a gritty, scrappy fighter himself, but is eight years older than Benn. The American southpaw had some tough moments in a war against a seasoned Joseph Diaz last summer, but delivered enough pounding body blows and potshots to have his hand raised.
That Prograis sometimes abandons his guard can become an issue against an aggressive Benn. After all, Prograis’ three pro losses — against Josh Taylor, Devin Haney and Jack Catterall — had him getting outboxed. Benn is capable of the same.
Of Prograis’ 30 professional victories, 24 have come by knockout, signaling the power that ‘Rougarou’ possesses in his hands.
If he can manage Benn’s volume, combatting or negating it with his blunt power, Prograis might be able to drag this fight into unforeseen sequences.
The danger with Prograis comes in the fact that he has seemingly nothing to lose and everything to gain by spoiling Benn’s Zuffa Boxing debut. Plus, Prograis touts some world-class experience having shared the ring with the likes of Haney, Taylor, Catterall and Jose Zepeda to name a few.
That said, the wave of self-belief that Benn accrued by unanimously defeating his rival in Eubank should have the British fighter roaring into this bout.
A big performance in his first bout with Zuffa Boxing, and live on Netflix, should be his driving incentive, giving Benn the edge here.
When Benn is locked in, as the boxing world got to see him in November at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he can be a load to deal with.
Another decisive victory over a proven entity in a formidable Prograis will only further Benn’s upward trajectory. DAZN News is giving his rugged skills the edge in this bout, 2-1. Haney, Shakur Stevenson, Ryan Garcia and Rolly Romero have all had words with Benn. Perhaps a convincing win this weekend brings Benn one step closer to one of those opportunities.
