Benn’s relationship with Eddie Hearn, the Matchroom boss, appeared to be solid with the pair enduring many hardships over the last few years.
In 2022, Benn reputation was severely tarnished when he failed a drugs test ahead of a meeting with Chris Eubank Jr.
The fight was postponed, but Hearn went on a massive journey defending his fighter which included multiple disputes on radio and television as he sought to clear Benn’s name.
Last year, Benn and Eubank Jr eventually fought twice with each man taking one victory, but with Benn claiming the latter win, it looked like he was about to enter 2026 with Hearn once again guiding his career with several big opportunities possible.
Instead, Dana White will be the man pushing Benn forward and the news has not gone down well at Matchroom.
Frank Smith, Hearn’s right-hand man at Matchroom, is disappointed by Benn’s exit, but he is not entirely surprised that he has made this decision.
“I've always been open about my views. I always thought Conor had this kind of thing in him. That’s the character he is,” said Smith when speaking to BoxingScene .
“Conor wouldn't be in the position he’s in without Matchroom. That’s the reality of it. And without Eddie. I’m not even saying myself – [but] without Eddie.
“You know, 10 years of grit, work, determination, investment. Who would have stood by him after the Cedrick Peynaud hard fight?
“Who would have stood by him after two years of the situation he went through and answered every question and not shied away from any question, and not shied away from defending him week in, week out?”
