When Tyson Fury called out Anthony Joshua two weeks ago, AJ made it clear that the fight would be made on his terms and not at the simple beckoning of ‘The Gypsy King.’
That paved the way for Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter at Matchroom Boxing, to tell Sky Sports that November is a target date for the mega fight, seemingly leaving the door open for AJ to take an interim bout in the summer.
However, in attendance at Fountainbleau Las Vegas for Jarrell ‘Big Baby’ Miller vs. Lenier Pero on Saturday night, Hearn provided a critical update to the Fury-Joshua negotiations, calling them “extremely deep.”
“It’s fair to say the last 24 hours particularly, but the last 48 hours have been very busy for myself and the legal team, looking and drafting those contracts,” Hearn told DAZN’s Chris Mannix. “We are fully committed to making that happen. His Excellency’s team are definitely not taking their foot off the brakes since Tottenham (where Fury called out Joshua), they've been keeping the pressure on which is great because we want to oblige and we want to get this done.”
He added: “I will leave it over to those guys for an official announcement, but let’s hope it’s very soon.”
Whether that means Joshua will forgo a possible warm-up fight to just concentrate on Fury remains to be seen, though Hearn tried to shed some light as to why AJ didn’t jump at the chance enter the ring and confront ‘The Gypsy King’ two weeks ago.
“We’ve been at the finish line before,” Hearn said, “and haven’t managed to creep over.”
That could explain why Joshua wants to get the contract inked before the pair of former heavyweight world champions engage in any buildup toward the biggest glamour division fight in England’s history in what could very well be the “final rivalry in their career” as Hearn put it.
