Two all-action Mexican fighters will unify their super featherweight titles Saturday night when Emanuel Navarrete and Eduardo ‘Sugar’ Nunez clash at Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, and live on DAZN. WBC titleholder O’Shaquie Foster has already expressed interest in fighting the winner.
Navarrete (39-2-1, 32 KOs), the WBO super featherweight world champion, had a controversial no-contest ruling against Charly Suarez in May, while IBF super featherweight titleholder Nunez (29-1, 27 KOs) is coming off a unanimous decision over Christopher Diaz in September.
Will Navarrete be able to stand up to Nunez’ unrelenting pressure enough to snag another title? Or will Nunez walk him down toward a unified crown? With the stakes soaring high for this fight, DAZN News analyzes the Keys to Victory for both champs.
Emanuel Navarrete has four inches of reach advantage and he ought to use it by catching an incoming Eduardo ‘Sugar’ Nunez with uppercuts or straight right hands. Navarrete works excellent angles on these shots and can use his length to possibly pick off a pressuring Nunez and keep the IBF titleholder at bay.
If successful establishing his range, Navarrete should look to piece together hard-hitting combinations. The left uppercut, followed by a looping right hand is one of Navarrete’s most potent combinations, although the WBO titleholder does a solid job of extending his combos by attaching additional punches.
That ‘Vaquero’ tends to do this in bursts makes him all the more dangerous with his multi-punch selections which he will need to overcome Nunez' power.
Navarrete’s greatest strength can also be his biggest weakness as the Mexican warrior’s penchant of long, sweeping shots can do major damage, but also leave him vulnerable to a sharp counter — something Nunez is capable of catching him with.
Therefore, in such a high-stakes spot like this, Navarrete has got to be himself and drive up his punch count in hopes of drowning Nunez out with volume toward capturing the unified crown.
However, he cannot afford to get too wide on his attempts as a big miss will leave him susceptible to a compact counter hook on the inside from Nunez.
Walking opponents down is always a vital key to Eduardo ‘Sugar’ Nunez’ success and against Emanuel Navarrete should not be any different.
Nunez must methodically cramp Navarrete’s quarters, while making sure to avoid harm’s way with the latter’s length.
‘Sugar’ can do this with two gloves up, showing a high, disciplined guard and plenty of sheer will as he stalks forward.
Watching Nunez rip the body is not for the faint of heart as the IBF titleholder pounds opponents’ midsection to organ-smushing mush, softening them up for something more damaging upstairs.
Getting inside of Navarrete’s reach has to be celebrated by teeing off on the WBO champ’s body with crunching, punishing shots.
The onus is on Nunez to time Navarrete’s punches, especially if 'Vaquero' is overextending on his shots.
Big swings and misses should give Nunez the intel needed to time a sharp counter hook, which could be the best bet for ‘Sugar’ to alter the course of this fight and leave with two titles in tow.
