Fabio Wardley "let himself down" against Daniel Dubois, with Derek Chisora keen on a rematch between the heavyweight pair.
The Ipswich fighter lost his WBO title against his fellow Briton in a dramatic contest at Manchester's Co-op Live on Saturday.
Wardley, who was elevated to the title after last year's interim win over Joseph Parker, landed two early knockdowns on his foe.
But the star was made to suffer by Dubois and his skillset, even as his brave, bloodied performance enhanced his reputation.
Chisora suggested a lack of respect for the latter's abilities may have cost Wardley after handpicking 'Dynamite' for his defence.
"Wardley let himself down, but Daniel came in with the way [that he was] here to destroy," the veteran told Sky Sports News.
"He walked into the ring sweating, ready to rock and roll. I believe Fabio didn't respect Daniel. [He] hit him with everything.
"I would like to see the rematch again. It was a good fight. We enjoyed it, and congratulations to Daniel for an amazing victory."
Fabio Wardley is a smart man both inside and outside the ring, a star willing to take the hard damage to land the big finish.
Yet against Daniel Dubois, the Ipswich fighter looked like he shipped too much punishment to make a rematch advisable.
Wardley is a more skilled fighter than many want to give him credit for, but his technical limitations were found on Saturday.
Perhaps red-line fever took over after his two massive rights put his rival on the canvas, driving him to chase that third closer.
Amid a crowded division, a rematch would offer a straight shot at revenge and a world title. But Wardley needs time to think.
