Hamzah Sheeraz's upcoming bout is against Alem Begic due to Jacob Bank's prior commitments, says WBO president Gustavo Olivieri.
The Briton will bid to secure his world championship dreams when he battles the German for the body's super-middleweight crown.
Having previously seen opponent Diego Pacheco pull out of discussions, Sheeraz had been expected to face Bank for the vacant strap.
But instead, Begic - ranked one spot lower in fourth than the third-place Dane - will instead get the opportunity to contest for the title.
Now, Olivieri has outlined the reasons, revealing Sheeraz's promoters Queensberry wanted to secure an fast replacement for Pacheco.
With Bank then-slated to face William Scull - who he stopped in a dozen rounds last month - it meant that the rising star was overlooked.
"Queensberry proceeded to select the first available contender," Olivieri told The Ring. "[They provided] an official date, venue and opponent
"[It was] signed, sealed, and delivered prior to Bank-Scull. Therefore, Bank was unavailable at the time of selection due to his commitment."
Sheeraz, who drew with Carlos Adames in their WBC middleweight bout last year, stopped Edgar Berlanga on his division debut in July.
He stands to benefit from a shake-up after Terence Crawford dethroned Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez for the undisputed crown, before subsequently retiring.
