Jack Massey got a taste of world championship experience back in October 2024, sharing the ring with Jai Opetaia.
With those learning lessons in tow, ‘One Smack’ tries to continue to make inroads at cruiserweight tonight when he faces Cheavon Clarke at the Bournemouth International Centre in Dorset, England. The bout will serve in chief support to the Zuffa Boxing headliner between fellow cruiserweights Chris Billam-Smith and Ryan Rozicki.
Though he was outmatched in a six-round TKO loss to Opetaia back in the fall of 2024, Massey (23-3, 13 KOs) rebounded by authoring a fourth-round TKO of Ivan Gabriel Garcia last November. He will try to build on the win against a rugged Clarke (11-2, 8 KOs) who last issued a fourth-round knockout of Anthony Holloway in December.
Will Massey put himself back in line for bigger bouts with a statement tonight? Or will Clarke seize the moment with a sharp display himself? DAZN News examines the Keys to Victory for both fighters.
Jack Massey owns about 1½ inches of reach advantage, which doesn’t sound like much, but the British fighter has the vantage point of operating from his 6-foot-4 frame.
That should allow him to establish range behind the jab. Massey should look to assert just that early, keeping an active puncher in Cheavon Clarke at bay on the outside.
Massey effectively puts in body work as part of his natural fighting flow. Doing this via a stab jab or with crunching hooks to the midsection might go long ways to slowing Clarke’s motor.
Far too often, Massey is caught sleeping because he’s standing too upright.
A simple solution would be to move his hands in ensuring his guard is active. Doing this while searching for his next bits of offense could aid in staying locked in with focus and not getting caught standing too upright where he lands himself in trouble.
From the onset, Cheavon Clarke must make it a point to get inside of Jack Massey’s jab.
He can do this with movement and forcing phone booth action. Either would neutralize Massey’s jab quite effectively.
Punching in traffic against Jack Massey is what tends to give ‘One Smack’ trouble as he’s often caught by crisp counterpunching while standing too upright as aforementioned.
Clarke must force this kind of action, rising up behind the guard to catch an unsuspecting Massey, especially with a left hook which the larger British fighter seems to be susceptible to.
Clarke cannot afford to lunge, overextend and miss as we’ve seen him do.
A miscalculated, wild attempt will give Massey the opening to use his reach and secure point swings in his favor.
Therefore, Clarke must make sure his offerings are served compactly, leaning into the timing on his shots to avoid big swings and misses.
I expect Jack Massey to pluck away with the jab on the outside and stand his ground on the inside just enough to have his hand raised in victory. Of course, all that could change if Clarke can successfully time a fight-altering counterpunch in traffic. However, 'One Smack' has enough in his bag to thwart those efforts.
