Mario Barrios appears likely to move from welterweight to light-middleweight after his loss to Ryan Garcia, says trainer Joe Goossen.
The ex-WBC welterweight champion saw his reign brought to a close at the T-Mobile Arena in a unanimous decision loss on Saturday.
Barrios arguably struggled to earn his stripes after two prior defences ended in draws, and leaves Las Vegas mulling his options.
Goossen, who previously trained Garcia, suggested that the punishing cut for the star may mean he opts to step up a division next.
"I'm happy for Ryan and I'm sad for Mario," he was quoted by The Ring. "He put in a lot of work. [A move] had been in discussion.
"He's one of the biggest welterweights I've ever seen. Cutting that weight was pretty treacherous. It will play tricks with your body."
Garcia comfortably threw more and outlanded Barrios throughout their battle, using his sheer volume off the back foot to dominate.
Goossen admits it came as no surprise, adding: "That's exactly how Ryan fights and that's exactly how I knew he was going to fight.
"We tried to prepare for it as best we could. Aside from the knockdown in the first round [...] we blocked a lot of his shots. He's tricky.
"He's great on his feet and will tie you up on the inside. That's not his favourite place. He'll move you around and walk you into shots."
It may come as little surprise to some, but it appears Mario Barrios is ready to draw a line under his tenure at welterweight for now.
The star lost his WBC strap to Ryan Garcia with a performance below his best at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
Trainer Joe Goossen's suggestions that a move to light-middleweight is next makes sense for the star on multiple levels though.
With straps in two divisions already, a step-up could pave the way for Barrios to pursue three-weight champion status down the line.
More to the point, it relieves the pressure on his body after a stint in a division where the weight cut seemed to frequently affect him.
