Then, Mayweather was the victor as one of boxing's greatest rivalries was settled in a blockbuster bout that set new records for PPV purchases. 

Despite the hype for the contest, it failed to live up to pre-fight expectations as Mayweather boxed cautiously on his way to routine points decision. 

Seemingly retired since 2017, Mayweather’s rematch with Pacquiao will be his first contest in almost ten years since he defeated Conor McGregor in another huge event.   

For Pacquiao, he is still an active fighter after returning to the ring after a four-year absence in 2025 when he was held to a draw by Mario Barrios when attempting to win the WBC welterweight crown. 

With Pacquiao having the more recent activity, some believe that will give him a significant advantage over Mayweather when they finally meet, but Robert Garcia, one of boxing's best coaches, thinks Floyd will be too clever. 

"I think Floyd [wins the rematch]. Floyd’s too smart, man. Too good,” said Anthony Joshua’s former trainer when speaking to RYCK Esports TV . 

“Floyd’s very healthy, and he’s got skills. He told us six to eight years ago that his body wasn’t that strong, but he’s still talented. The little that he's got left, I think it's enough to beat Pacquiao."
