Nathaniel Collins saw his featherweight world title hopes go up in smoke on Friday night as he lost a split decision to Cristobal Lorente.
The Scotsman was aiming to make amends for the pair's original encounter last October, when they held each other to a draw in Glasgow.
Instead however, he came up agonisingly short again, losing narrowly on the scorecards despite scoring a knockdown at The OVO Hydro.
It means his rival is now in the box seat to push on for a crack at the division's biggest prizes, namely WBC champion Bruce Carrington.

Few pills will have been as bitter to swallow as the result this weekend on home soil for 'The Nightmare', as he suffered a first professional defeat.
Collins, long mooted for a major domestic dance with former WBA champion Nick Ball, now will need to reconsider his route through the division.
Given his broadly strong record and the backing of Queensberry supremo Frank Warren, the Glasgow man will likely get another shot in due time.
But a rebuild against another ranked opponent will likely be in store, as he seeks to put himself back in the shop window for those bigger chances.
Cristobal Lorente
Matters are fairly cut and dried for Lorente after his win here, with the Spaniard now the mandatory challenger for Carrington and his WBC crown.
When that materialises however remains to be seen, with the American perhaps unlikely to be rushed in his plans to fight again anytime soon.
If there is a stumbling block for Lorente, it may be that his opponent can find a way to secure a unified bout for himself rather than face him next.
If that happens, then perhaps a lower-ranked foe may be sought for the Spaniard - but it seems more likely he will wait his turn to keep his place.
