Fighting out of South Africa, he is the reigning national Super Middleweight champion, having built a reputation for his resilience and fearlessness in the ring.​

Wellem hails from the heartland of South Africa's boxing scene, the Eastern Cape. He is trained by former Olympic fighter Phumzile 'Sweet Chocolate' Matyhila.

Other notable South African fighters to emerge from the Eastern Cape include former World Champions Vuyani Bungu, Welcome Ncita and 'Hawk' Makepula.
