Could two of boxing's top pound-for-pound fighters be on a collision course?
On Monday's episode of Inside the Ring, which can be seen on DAZN, insider Mike Coppinger reported WBO welterweight champion Devin Haney and WBO and Ring Magazine super lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson are in preliminary talks for a future fight.
After the news came out, Stevenson released a statement saying the report was false.
"I know fans like to get excited and they could play with yall heads and manipulate yall easily but that rumor is cap for the 2nd time," Stevenson said in his tweet. "I haven’t heard one word about that, idk what they tryna cover up or disguise but for me and my team we haven’t heard s—."
If the fight ever comes to fruition, a big question is at what weight the fight would take place, as Coppinger reported that it is a hurdle right now. Stevenson (25-0, 11 KOs) had stated after his 140-pound title win over Teofimo Lopez that he wouldn't be going up to 147 pounds, and anyone who competes at welterweight would have to meet him somewhere in the middle.
Haney (33-0, 15 KOs) hasn't publicly commented on the report. The former undisputed lightweight champion last fought in November, dominating Brian Norman Jr. to capture the WBO belt to become a three-division titlist.
