Cruiserweight Brandon Glanton returns following defeat by Brit Chris Billam-Smith on the undercard of Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn’s first meeting in April to headline a card of his own, taking on fellow American Marcus Browne.

A cursory glance down the list of fighters in action will see the name Abdul Khan, a 13-0 (3 KOs) super featherweight fighting out of Bolton. A cousin of former Olympian and world champion Amir Khan, the 23-year-old is hoping to further his own career by fighting in Africa, live on DAZN.

Who is Abdul Khan?

Khan has a decent amateur pedigree, winning the ABA Youth tournament and reaching the final of the Celtic Box Youth Cup, before turning professional in 2021.

Since making his debut out in Dubai four years ago, Khan has won 13 straight bouts. Either fighting in and around the north near his birthplace of Bolton or in exotic locations such as the United Arab Emirates and Ghana, Khan is managed by his cousin. 

Based out of the Elite Boxing Gym in Manchester, Khan has already headlined a show of his own, defeating John Edwardson in Liverpool last year on a card shown live on DAZN.

On offer that evening was the Commonwealth Silver super featherweight strap, a belt he has subsequently relinquished.

Khan is currently trained by Alex Matvienko, a former Bolton fighter that finished with a professional record of 15-1-3 (5 KOs). The 23-year-old was previously under the guidance of Roy Jones Jr, a four-weight world champion.

 

The super featherweight has also sparred with three-division undisputed champion Terence Crawford during a stint in the United States. Of course, Abdul has also tapped into the resource of having an Olympic silver medallist in his team, working with his cousin on the pads and in the gym.

Although only a super featherweight, Khan has secured three knockout victories, including in his last outing. The Bolton-born boxer stopped Joseph Sackey in Ghana back in June, fighting on a card organised by his cousin’s AK Promotions.

What is Abdul Khan’s relation to Amir Khan?

Abdul Khan and Amir Khan are cousins, but their relationship is not just familial. 

Amir Khan has been involved in his cousin’s boxing career long before re-entering the sport as a promoter, helping Abdul with advice as a manager.

The former unified super lightweight champion even helped arrange Abdul’s debut professional fight.

Abdul Khan told The Bolton News ahead of his debut: “It just came out of Amir and I talking, and we thought it would be good for me to finally get out there.

“Amir told me to come over and get some training in. It was so hot at 40 degrees, completely different to training here, so we trained in the evening.

“It was all set up by him and when the opportunity came around, I took it with both hands.”

Abdul told The Sun that he never felt pressured to follow in his cousin’s footsteps, but as soon as he indicated that he would join the paid ranks, Amir started to give him advice.

“[He] never told me to avoid boxing, but also never urged me to get into it,” Khan explained in 2021.

“I just loved it growing up, with Amir and David Haye especially.

“When the idea to turn professional started getting serious he gave me loads of advice and guidance.”

When is Abdul Khan’s next fight?

Khan will be in action on the undercard of ‘Chaos in the Ring’, a show staged in Nigeria by AK Promotions.

He will take on local Nigerian fighter Durotimi Agboola, who enters the bout with a record of four wins and two losses in six professional contests. The 29-year-old has fared well at domestic level in his homeland, winning the Nigerian super bantamweight national title in 2024.

Khan has experience in being the away fighter in front of a hostile crowd, having travelled to Ghana in June to knockout Joseph Sackey in the sixth round of an eight-round bout.

Victory over Sackey is Khan’s only fight so far this year, having fought just twice in 2024.
