Barry McGuigan knows Daniel Dubois fairly well following a short spell when his son, Shane McGuigan, trained the current WBO heavyweight champion.
Last month, Dubois produced arguably the finest performance of his career as he climbed off the floor twice to stop Fabio Wardley in one of the best fights ever seen inside a British ring.
Dubois answered many questions with his victory as there had been doubts about his heart and durability, but by overcoming several crises against Wardley, he is now in a position where he may feel stronger moving forward.
Despite having many options in front of him, it appears Dubois’ immediate engagement is a rematch with Wardley after it was revealed the Ipswich man has a clause to activate a second meeting.
That fight could take place later this year as the heavyweight division continues to deliver, and the victor of that will head into 2027 as one of boxing’s biggest names looking to secure huge showdowns with the likes of Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, and Oleksandr Usyk.
McGuigan, a former world champion and now one of the leading voices on boxing, has offered his verdict on a potential rematch and he doesn't hold much hope for a Wardley victory.
“I don’t like to see the way he finished the fight and the amount of punishment he took,” said Wardley when speaking to Boxing King Media.
“He should have either had a longer period of rest and allowed Dubois to defend again, but then of course he could have got beaten.
"I don’t think the result will change, I think it will be the same. I fancy Dubois in the second fight too.”
