Chesterfield warned about easing up after Sam Curtis goal moves them into sixth

Assistant-manager Danny Webb has warned Chesterfield about taking things for granted after they beat Gillingham 1-0 to move up into a play-off spot.

A first-half goal from Sam Curtis saw the Spireites climb to sixth in League Two.

Chesterfield have lost just one of their last nine games, but Webb knows things can change quickly.

He said: “I thought it was a real good game of football. I’ve got to say it was a real humdinger, loads of tackles flying about, a little bit of excitement on the bench, good crowd getting behind us and ultimately the three points and a clean sheet.

“We go up to sixth in the league and sometimes you need a little bit of luck with other results. I think Salford lost at home and that jumps you up, so they’ve had a little bit of a bringing down to earth after the game at Manchester City.

“But now it’s obviously up to us to continue this run (and) make sure we now stay in that top seven because there’s nothing worse than having a step forward and two back. So we’re on a good run in terms of being unbeaten.

“It’s now crucial we don’t let ourselves down by going down to Crawley and not turning up.”

Gillingham boss Gareth Ainsworth conceded that his team came up short against opponents he tips to make the play-offs.

Ainsworth said: “It’s another set piece that we’ve conceded against the team that I believe will be in the play-offs. One of the better teams in the league.

“I think they’re very good going forward. Frustrating because we limited their chances until we opened up and went for it.

“We’re a little bit off, we’re still a little bit off where I want to be. I know it’s been good and when I came in we had the unbeaten run and everything.

“I think some of the balls, some of the passing is just a bit astray, don’t find the man that we want to find, and it was frustrating to them. But, you know, we have this plan and we’re going to go for it.

“The boys would front that up. They came right up to the fans and said, ‘look, we’ve given everything tonight’. We just came up short against a very good Chesterfield side.

“I thought they ground us down in that first half and then the second half, we threw a lot at them, but sometimes the quality wasn’t there at the end and we’ve got to be better than that.

“I want to change this. I intend to change this next year. I want to give you something to scream about and shout about. This season has been a build on last season. I want to finish higher than we did last season. Where that is, I don’t know.”
