The fifth-round match had a little bit of everything as the opponents battled over 120 minutes in a game punctuated by Danny Welbeck's 114th-minute winner for the Seagulls. Before Welbeck's dramatic winning goal, the sides each found the back of the net inside the first 90 minutes as Alexander Isak's 22nd-minute penalty was nullified by Yankuba Minteh's 44th-minute strike.

But it wasn't just goals that the teams traded as each side also had a man sent off. Newcastle's Anthony Gordon was shown red in the 83rd minute for violent conduct, putting the Magpies down a player for less than ten minutes as Tariq Lamptey earned a second yellow card for a reckless slide tackle just before extra time.

With so much going on in the match, it could be overlooked that Welbeck once again dealt the final blow to the Magpies on their home ground. Brighton also defeated Newcastle 1-0 at St. James' Park back in October, and it was Welbeck's 35th-minute goal that decided that match.

For the 34-year-old, who entered Sunday's match in the 80th minute, it was pleasing to be the Seagulls' hero in front of a hostile crowd. 

"It is nice to come here to St. James' Park, such a special atmosphere," Welbeck told BBC Match of the Day. "The fans made it an amazing atmosphere - great to get the winner, again.

"I feel like we played well. We know when we come up against Newcastle that it's going to be an intense game. They have some dangerous players with some great ability, and we have to match that, and we did that today and come out on top.

"When you're on the bench you have to analyse the game and see where you can make a difference and today that's what we did. You see Joao Pedro at the end struggling to run. He gave so much and I believe that's what gave us the winner."
