Eric Ramsay frustrated as West Brom reign starts with last-gasp loss

West Brom boss Eric Ramsay was unable to hide his disappointment after his side suffered a late 3-2 defeat to Middlesbrough in his first game in charge.

Middlesbrough hit the front in fortunate fashion when Alex Gilbert’s strike bounced off the post and Charlie Taylor smashed into his own goal, and it looked like they would cruise to victory when Sam Silvera scored his second goal in as many games to make it 2-0.

West Brom fought back though, Isaac Price slamming in a free-kick to cut the deficit before Jed Wallace came off the bench to equalise – but there was heartbreak for Ramsay as Delano Burgzorg snatched the points for second-placed Boro in the 90th minute.

Ramsay insists he does not want to get too low with the late defeat but says it was only natural to be disappointed.

He said: “It’s difficult to not feel very disappointed, I wouldn’t be human if that wasn’t the case.

“Certainly after we got ourselves back in the game you could only see one winner, the fact we haven’t is disappointing.

“I’m very much wrapped in the process that we get better and I’m not going to get too drawn into the highs and lows but it’s difficult not to experience that today. It’s difficult as a human being not to get swept up in that.

“When we strip the emotion away and look at a very balanced game against a very good team after three days with a couple of difficulties, that will amount to us feeling good about what we can take forward.

“At this stage of the season, losing games at home is not ideal, that’s not lost on me.”

West Brom conceded another late goal which has been a common theme throughout their season, and it is something Ramsay is keen to get to the bottom of.

He added: “I haven’t got any scars from the previous 26 games and if it’s a theme, we really have to get our finger on why but it’s a very difficult thing to do.

“No one game will look the same, no one incident will look the same but if you look at (Boro’s) goal, it’s a lack of discipline and concentration.”

Middlesbrough moved to within three points of league leaders Coventry and boss Kim Hellberg insists a win at The Hawthorns was one of the best memories he has had since joining in November.

He said: “Winning in the last minutes is a feeling that is difficult to get somewhere else.

“The happiness and seeing everyone on the bench so happy, I think it was one of my best moments since I arrived here.

“It’s a top quality goal in the 90th minute (but) cruising to 2-0 is good for my heart so if I can pick that I will.”
