Florent Malouda says it is the UEFA Champions League or bust for Chelsea this season, calling qualification for Europe's top competition a 'minimum objective'.

The Blues have enjoyed a good start to the campaign under new manager Enzo Maresca, as they head into the weekend in fourth place in the Premier League.

The West London side were idle through the international break and will jump back into the fire on Sunday versus league leaders Liverpool for the marquee match of the weekend.

A strong result at Anfield would put Maresca's men in good stead as they look to re-establish themselves among the Premier League elite.

For Malouda, a Champions League winner with Chelsea in his playing days, his old club are in a good spot right now and are on track to meet his own expectations this season.

"For me, the minimum objective for Chelsea this season has to be to get the club back in the Champions League," Malouda told Coin Poker.

"Being in the Champions League will help the club attract world-class players. Chelsea also needs to remain competitive in the Premier League.

"I don’t expect us to win the title this season, I don’t think this team is ready to challenge for that yet.

"But we need to stay within touching distance with the top three for as long as possible.

"Long term, Chelsea needs to get back to a place where it is challenging for the Premier League title.

"We must show the other teams in the Premier League that we’re good enough to compete over 38 games."
