Gary Bowyer believes Burton should have taken all three points at Mansfield

Burton boss Gary Bowyer was pleased with a precious point for his side’s relegation battle in a goalless draw at Mansfield but admits they should have taken all three.

The Brewers wasted some big chances to win against a below-par Stags side, who are now eight Sky Bet League One games unbeaten.

“With that performance we need to be leaving here with all three points, but we aren’t as we have not done enough in front of goal,” he said.

“It was good to get a clean sheet away from home, but we have had some wonderful opportunities and we haven’t taken them.

“The most important thing if you are not taking your chances is making sure you keep that clean sheet, and we did that. There were loads of positives.

“So we leave with a point, which is a point more than we had this morning, and we move on to the next one.

“We played well, but it was just that last bit that let us down. We just need a bit more composure in the final third.”

Albion started well and Charlie Webster volleyed over from an Udoka Godwin-Malife cross in the first minute, while Tyrese Shade saw his low shot from a Kyran Lofthouse rattle the left post shortly after.

After 21 minutes, Jake Beesley lifted his finish over from seven yards from a square ball by Lofthouse.

Beesley could have finished with a hat-trick, but scuffed a six-yard effort at Mansfield goalkeeper Harry Lewis after 71 minutes and sent a diving header wide at the near post.

Regan Hendry forced home goalkeeper Bradley Collins to comfortably save in the first half.

The Stags’ best moment came in the 65th minute when Rhys Oates saw his shot on the turn superbly parried by Collins at full stretch.

Mansfield boss Nigel Clough said: “It’s more about the four points over the two Easter games really and the two clean sheets.

“We struggled to create much today, as did both teams, and we just needed a bit of quality or a break like we got on Friday at Doncaster.

“So I think a draw was probably a fair result.

“I think the way we competed from set plays today was the key to our clean sheet. I thought we dealt with them brilliantly.

“Burton throw a lot of balls into the box and are a very awkward team to play against, which is why they get results against a lot of the top teams.

“We didn’t have our first-choice keeper Liam Roberts today with his calf. Harry Lewis has hardly played, but he’s come in for two games and he has kept two clean sheets which is brilliant for us and for him.

“It has been a good Easter. We lost to Stockport on December 20 and we have only lost three league games since, and it’s the first week in April. So it has been an exceptional run.”
