Luke Williams admits ‘anxiety crept in’ after Peterborough’s draw with Burton

Luke Williams compared his Peterborough side to a child who left their homework to the night before after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Burton.

Charlie Webster opened the scoring for the Brewers in the first half before Harry Leonard levelled with his 15th goal of the season.

It was a result which pushed both sides four points clear of the drop.

Williams, whose side have not won in six, said: “I’m not sure if we have enough points. I have to try and predict six fixtures at the weekend and another six and I don’t have the type of brain for that.

“It’s unlikely on that tally, I don’t know. Let’s concentrate on being more competitive and getting more points.

“We had the homework and the teacher gave us six months to do it and we’ve left it to the night before.

“Now we’re desperately trying to cut up things and glue them to a piece of paper.

“We’re probably up until 3am with bags under our eyes and probably hand in a project we should have spent a lot more time on.

“Some anxiety crept in that we didn’t score in that opening spell. We’re not quite there at the moment. There are nerves and we lost a grip of the game.”

He continued: “We looked really determined to get back on terms and I was happy to see that. We made some real unforced errors because of that bit of tension.

“The way Harry Leonard scored and celebrated summed it up. There was that bit of anger among the whole team.

“We’re good enough to win that game, but on the balance a point was a fair result.”

Burton boss Gary Bowyer was frustrated his side did not put the game to bed when they had the chance.

He said: “You look at the chances that we had, we had to be out of sight.

“In terms of clear-cut opportunities, we get to half-time with a wonderful goal from Charlie.

“It’s about having that mentality to take that responsibility and we didn’t do that. We allowed them to get back into the game and a flow by giving some cheap fouls away.

“We’re a point better off than where we were this morning.”

He continued: “I’ve told the lads that when you have those chances you have to be out of sight and when the momentum goes against you, you have to see it out.

“We were looking for the next goal, but we had to make sure we took the point and we did that.

“It comes back and bites you. It’s the game of football – you’re never going to have it all your own way.

“The most important thing is when we were struggling, second half, we made sure we left here with something.”
