They may have been rivals on the pitch, but Oliver Glasner and Mikel Arteta have extended their best wishes to former Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior, who was sacked earlier this week.
Rosenior's brief time in charge of the Blues ended with five straight Premier League losses without a goal, the longest such streak for the club in over a century, and it came with just five more games left to play in the season.
With Arteta and Glasner each still fighting to achieve their own goals as managers of London-based sides, they reacted to yet another Premier League boss being shown the door.
"It’s always sad to see a colleague leave a club, and especially when we are so close to the end of the season," Arsenal manager Arteta said. "At the end, the clubs are here, and they try to make decisions.
"We know the scrutiny and the demands on our jobs, and we know that the only thing that matters at the end is winning a lot of matches."
Glasner, meanwhile, has already announced his impending departure from Crystal Palace at the end of the season, and when asked about Chelsea's handling of Rosenior, he recounted a sobering statistic that he learned when completing his coaching badges.
"When I did my coaching programme, we went to Nyom to the UEFA headquarters and the first speaker was on screen," Glasner said. "First it was ‘welcome to the land of no sleep!’ – and then there was the average time you spend at a club is 1.2 years, and 56% of managers don't find a second job after the first one. ‘You can still leave and think about it if you want to become a manager.’
"That's just the reality where we are in. If you don't like it, you have to look for a different job. It's very volatile, we know it, yes. Do I think that's the best? I don't think so.
"You always need a little bit of time to implement your ideas, to create, and I think it is the most important thing to create a winning environment, an environment where everybody is aligned and goes in the same direction.
"I think you see it in the Premier League, how many managers are still in charge who started this season, and it's just the reality."
