Premier League preview: What will be taken to the final day on top flight's penultimate round?

The penultimate round of the Premier League is spread right across the weekend and into Tuesday, as Saturday is cleared for the FA Cup Final to take centre stage.

It means league issues will be focused around Monday, where the key game involves the battle at the bottom, while there are several teams still clinging onto European hopes, depending on how everything falls in the final two games of 2025-26.

Here are all the big talking points heading into Matchday 37.

Hammer time

Sunday's headline act will come from St James' Park, where nothing else but a win will do for a West Ham side looking to save the Premier League skins.

Tottenham's failure to beat Leeds on Monday means there's still a fighting chance for Nuno Espirito Santo's men, but it requires them to try and bridge the two-point gap that currently separates them from their London rivals.

A defeat on Tyneside could see them relegated if Spurs then beat Chelsea next week, so at the very least, the Hammers will want to take the fight to the final day and that means picking up a win at a ground where they did taste victory last season.

For their part, the Magpies have the slimmest of chances of still securing some form of European football, but it's very unlikely. However, Eddie Howe will want to sign off at St James' with a win off the back of an underwhelming campaign.

Arsenal's ideal day

There'll be no title talk until Monday evening, when Arsenal get to once again lay down the gauntlet to Manchester City and challenge them to take the chase to the final day.

And the Gunners couldn't have asked for a more ideal game to finish their home campaign, as they host already-relegated Burnley.

Not only would you expect Mikel Arteta's side to pick up the three points that could secure them the title, if City fail to beat Bournemouth the following night, but there's also an ample opportunity to rack up some goals, too, just in case goal difference does come into play.

Passports ready?

The permutations calculators will be out all weekend, as clubs try to work out what chances they have left of qualifying for Europe.

A lot will depend on Aston Villa and Crystal Palace's results in their respective Europa finals, where certain scenarios could see as low as ninth become a European place.

Therefore, don't dismiss Sunday's offering as games with nothing on the line, as there's still hope for the likes of Brentford, Brighton and even Fulham of needing their passports next term.
