Sheringham, speaking to BoyleSports who offer the latest Euro 2024 betting, engaged in a bit of fantasy football and chose the England players from Euro 1996 that he thinks would improve Gareth Southgates current side given time travel capabilities.

The retired longtime England striker chose Arsenal's talismanic centre-back Adams as one of the 1996 players who could step into today's Three Lions squad, although he acknowledged that the current side would be incredibly tough to break into for players of any era.

"If I could choose any player from 1996 to be in the current England squad then I would go for Tony Adams, without a doubt a proper leader on the pitch," Sheringham said.

"He knew his game inside out, knew other people's games inside out and made people tick on the big stage.

"He didn't care how he played, he made sure that the rest of his team were phenomenal on the day. I think you need players at that top level to be unselfish in their manner.

"And I think he would ease into the England team now to be that main man to let other people flourish.

"Gazza [Paul Gascoigne] would also be a top top name for me, but there isn’t a lot between the 96 side and the current side, which was also phenomenal.

"It would be hard to pick between Alan Shearer and Harry Kane, slightly different players but top performers. 

"Darren Anderton as well would be a top performer, all the Manchester United players loved him and wanted him to join the club when he was playing for Tottenham, after they realised how good he was when he was playing for England.

"Although maybe not as good on the ball, Paul Ince would do the job Declan Rice does, David Seaman as well was a top top performer and he'd probably be better than Jordan Pickford for me."
