Liverpool overcame a first-half deficit to draw 1-1 with visiting Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday, in a match that had big implications for the Premier League title race.

Not only did neither side come away with a victory, but the result sees Arsenal remain as league leaders for the time being.

Liverpool and City ended their match in a draw despite a furious push by the home side after equalising in the 50th minute, and several close calls on both ends ultimately failed to decide the game.

For Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, the match was both a fair result and a bit of a let down.

"Second half was obviously much better than 15-20 minutes in the first half," Van Dijk told Sky Sports. "We should have closed the middle a bit better but we reacted well.

"We had very good chances, unfortunately we couldn't get the winner but overall bittersweet.

"Based on the second half you feel we should have won it, but they hit the post as well. It was so close."

The 32-year-old further explained his feelings about the hotly contested match, giving credit to a Man City side that provided a stern challenge.

"Manchester City has been very successful with the titles they have won and every game we have played against each other have been very intense," Van Dijk said.

"Every game is so difficult, they have quality all over the pitch and that is why they won the treble last year.

"I respect that but the aim for us today was to win the game."
