Wolverhampton Wanderers are staring down the possibility of relegation, and contract timelines suggest up to nine players could depart over the next two seasons.
Wolves’ position is increasingly bleak, and the Midlands side are still rooted at the foot of the Premier League table.
They are at risk of recording one of the worst seasons in the competition’s history should results not improve.
Wolves could yet finish with fewer points than Derby County ’s record-low tally of 11 points from the 2007-08 campaign, a benchmark that remains the Premier League’s worst-ever return.
Despite the scale of Wolves’ struggles, only one senior player is currently out of contract at the end of the season.
Defender Matt Doherty is due to see his deal expire this summer, leaving the club with a decision over whether to retain an experienced figure for a potential Championship campaign.

Beyond Doherty, however, the longer-term picture suggests increasing pressure points. Goalkeeper Jose Sa is under contract until 2027, with an option for an additional year, but has already drawn interest in previous transfer windows.
Backup goalkeeper Dan Bentley is also out of contract in 2027, though Wolves hold an option to extend.
A larger group of players are scheduled to reach the end of their contracts in 2028, with Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, Hwang Hee-chan, Santi Bueno, Hugo Bueno, Sam Johnstone and striker Nathan Fraser all due to be out of contract that summer.
While those expiries are not imminent, relegation would significantly increase the likelihood that those timelines will be brought forward, particularly where wages or resale value are factors.
Dropping into the Championship would immediately reduce broadcast revenue, forcing Wolves to reassess their wage structure and squad depth.
In that scenario, the club would be unlikely to allow multiple contracts to run down simultaneously.
Rather than a single clear-out, Wolves could face a rolling cycle of exits over the next two seasons, driven by contract deadlines and financial constraints rather than short-term form.
Taken together, up to nine players could leave between now and the summer of 2028.
With relegation looming and the threat of a historically low points total still hanging over the club, the consequences of this season are already extending well beyond the final league position.
