It looks like there could be another major women's club football tournament being created.

As reported by The Athletic, FIFA have taken the next step forward in creating a women's version of the Club World Cup with a provisional date in place for the inaugral edition of the tournament.

A number of obstacles need to be successfully navigated in order for this competition to become a reality, but this is a huge bonus for the women's football as it's popularity continues to grow across the world.

DAZN takes a look at what a Women's Club World Cup tournament would look like.

How many teams could enter the Women's Club World Cup?

FIFA will need to make sure that every region is represented at this new tournament.

While the newly expanded men's competition will be made up of 32 teams, this could be stretch for the women's edition and therefore it's likely that  a 16-team format is the way forward.

Which countries would be involved in the Women's Club World Cup?

The teams involved will be from football's six confederations, Africa, Asia, Europe, North and Central America, Oceania and South America.

When would the Women's Club World Cup take place?

Initially there were plans to stage this tournament every year, but opposition from UEFA has resulted in the governing body accepting a proposal of biennial Women's Club World Cups starting in 2026.

Regarding when in 2026, FIFA will have to find a way to navigate it around the men's World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the US which will take place in the summer.

Therefore a Women's Club World Cup would have to take place in spring, autumn or winter which would also require FIFA to negotiate with domestic leagues in Europe and North America when it comes to adding the tournament to their respective calendars.
