Roy Jones Jr is 57 years old, but the former pound-for-pound superstar is showing no signs of slowing down his fighting career.
Three years since his last fight against Anthony Pettis and almost six years since his exhibition contest against Mike Tyson, Jones Jr is still tempted to get into the boxing ring, and he has now admitted that Thierry Henry could be someone he’d like to take on.
The former Arsenal and France forward, now one of football’s most respected pundits, has never shown an interest in boxing but he is often working with Kate Scott who is married to Malik Scott, the former heavyweight contender and trainer of Deontay Wilder.
At the peak of his powers, Jones Jr was boxing's best fighter, and he eased his way through several weight classes before becoming heavyweight world champion in 2003 with a one-sided victory over John Ruiz.
As well as Ruiz, Jones Jr also registered impressive wins over the likes of Bernard Hopkins and James Toney before his career endured a drastic downturn in 2004 after stoppage losses to Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson.
Now an analyst on the sport he gave so much to and also a highly sought after trainer, it appears that Jones Jr has not given up on stepping into the ring one more time.
“Would I consider an exhibition with Thierry Henry? Because of the sport I am in, and because of who I am, if the money was right, why would I not?” said Jones Jr when speaking to Grosvenor Casinos .
“If somebody came with the right bag of course, I'd probably jump up and say, 'that's a reason for me to go get in shape again.'
“I don't want to get in shape, and I'm definitely not going to get in shape for nothing, because I did so many years of training. But yes, if somebody said, 'Hey, we got X amount of dollars to come move around and do an exhibition.'
“I really don't entertain much anymore, because most stuff is not really valid, so I don't pay most people much attention, but a person like him, he's capable of paying for what he wants to do.”
