Trouble brewing for Ryan Garcia ahead of his WBC welterweight title challenge against Mario Barrios at The Ring: High Stakes on Saturday, Feb. 21, live on DAZN PPV?
Boxing Scene first reported, and DAZN News subsequently confirmed, that Garcia was fined $5,000 and given a warning of possible future punishment by the WBC for missing the mandatory 14-day video weight check.
"Ryan Garcia’s 14-day weight check was supposed to be received this past Saturday, February 7," WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman told Garcia’s team on February 10.
"Champion Barrios did comply with the video of this mandatory safety rule. The WBC hereby imposes a $5000 (five thousand dollars) fine for non-compliance.
"We expect to receive the weight video either today or first thing tomorrow morning, depending on his training schedule.
"If we do not receive this video by then, we will be making a press statement and will contact the boxing commission with this concern."
Ultimately, both Garcia came in under the obligated 155-pound limit two weeks away from the fight. Garcia came in at 154.2 pounds while Barrios was 153 last Saturday.
The next weigh-in check is today, where both guys have to be within three percent of the 147-pound welterweight limit.
"King Ry" has come in overweight in the past. Back in April 2023, before his scheduled WBC super lightweight title fight against Devin Haney, Garcia missed weight by over three pounds.
