Fresh off being crowned the new WBO super lightweight world champion, Shakur Stevenson made it a point to attend the Mario Barrios vs. Ryan Garcia fight at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, and live on DAZN PPV and Ultimate Tier on Saturday night.
Not only did the pound-for-pound star offer some stinging criticism of Garcia’s boxing skills, but he also touted that he wouldn’t be surprised if Barrios winds up retaining his WBC welterweight title tonight.
“He’s the more disciplined fighter,” Stevenson told DAZN of Barrios. “He could cause a big upset tonight. I could see him coming out victorious tonight.”
Having watched Garcia’s disappointing, underwhelming unanimous decision loss to Rolando Romero last May, Stevenson was left with plenty of questions that are still on his mind.
“Where is his right hand? Do we know where his right hand is?” Stevenson asked about Garcia's boxing skills. “He needs more than one hand to win a fight. If you take away Ryan’s left hook, he becomes vulnerable, and I feel Rolly kind of exposed that.
“Maybe he was scared, and he probably thought Rolly was going to counter him if he threw his right hand.”
Though the undefeated Stevenson has expressed interest in fighting Garcia, he told DAZN on Saturday night that he does not have any immediate plans to move up to welterweight.
“There’s some guys in there that I see that I know I would beat,” Stevenson said while scanning over The Ring’s welterweight rankings. “I don’t plan on moving to 147 any time soon.”
That said, he didn’t rule it out, either.
“If you pressure me enough,” the Newark, New Jersey product said, “I may just go to that weight class.”
