Alex Revell: Stevenage stayed together during winless run

Stevenage manager Alex Revell hailed his side’s determination and character after a 1-0 win over Peterborough reignited their League One play-off hopes.

Boro had been without a win in eight games but a Dan Sweeney header from a Harvey White corner in the 79th minute was a deserved reward for a dominant performance.

And it keeps them just three points behind the top six, even after such a barren run.

Revell said: “It was well deserved and could have been a lot more, (we) dominated from start to finish. Our energy and togetherness and everything about the group was really good.

“It’s been a frustrating period but they’ve kept going, kept believing and kept together and I’m really pleased with that.

“There were too many top performances to mention anyone individually really, they all came together and worked really hard on what we wanted to do.

“We needed to keep going because we had a lot of chances and we just needed to take one to settle us down.

“We knew set-pieces would be a big threat of ours and I think we could have scored from three or four to be honest.

“But it was just important to win. You could say it was a performance we needed.

“And when you keep your energy, things change. Some performances over this period have deserved a lot more and we haven’t got it.

“Hopefully that just settles us down and another clean sheet again, lots created, there were some real positive signs and a few smiles in the changing room, which is nice to see.”

Peterborough were without any senior centre-backs after illness ruled George Nevett and Tom Lees out earlier in the day.

Posh boss Luke Williams felt his makeshift defence, which included Lucca Mendonca and Peter Kioso, almost helped them to a point.

He said: “We prepared the game but then in the early hours of this morning, they were both unwell and so then we had to make a change.

“They’ve been quite ill, so that’s a concern for me, but then we have other players so it was time for somebody else to play.

“And I had no complaints. It’s a tough game to be a central defender because they’re very, very athletic and very quick to play to the top line.

“It was a very, very tough game but I think maybe we were value for a point.

“They had a back five and defended very well. We just couldn’t make a breakthrough, and that was frustrating for the fans. I think they’re quite upset to not see some more attacking play. I get that.

“But the players were trying to come up with a solution and were excellent in their endeavour.

“We just couldn’t make it.”
