Former Manchester United Andy Cole believes some time away from the starting eleven at Old Trafford could help Marcus Rashford on the domestic stage.

Rashford was in fine form during the international break and scored England's second goal in a 3-1 win over Italy on Tuesday night which secured qualification for next year's European Championship.

However, when it comes to performances for the Red Devils, Rashford has struggled to find the back of the net. In his 10 appearances so far this season, the England international has only managed to score one goal which is underwhelming return considering he is one of United's main goal threats.

One of the reasons why Rashford maybe struggling for goals according to Cole is that he maybe lacking confidence, and therefore some time away from the spotlight could be what is needed for Rashford to reset.

"When I was a footballer, whenever I lacked belief I wanted to stay in the starting eleven in a bid to regain my confidence. However, now that I'm retired, I can see why it’s good for some players to be taken out of the firing line," Cole told Betfred.

“If you don’t count last season for Marcus and you look at the two seasons prior to that, his form was exactly the same as it is now.

"You can only ask Marcus what the problem is, but we know that the season before last that he was dealing with some personal issues, which is something that he admitted last year, and after how good he was last season, we were all expecting him to kick on again in this current campaign and have the confidence in himself to replicate that form."

Manchester United's first Premier League game after the international break takes place on Saturday night when they make the trip to Bramall Lane to face the struggling Sheffield United.
