Inter Milan’s 2025-26 Serie A campaign makes for strange viewing: rarely spectacular, but relentlessly effective.

After 15 matches in Italy’s top flight, they sit atop the table with 33 points, holding a slender lead ahead of AC Milan and Napoli, the markers of a team that doesn’t always delight the eye but consistently delivers results.

Their 2-1 win at Genoa this past Sunday, secured through early goals and disciplined defending, encapsulated a season defined more by ruthless efficiency than entertaining dominance.

Inter haven’t been the most free-scoring outfit in the division, but they have won 11 of their 15 games – and crucially, have yet to draw in Serie A – a testament to their all-or-nothing consistency. The Nerazzurri have scored 34 goals so far, at an average of around 2.27 per game, while maintaining a sturdy defensive record that has seen them concede under a goal per match.

That mix of solidity and clinical finishing in the final third has been enough to keep them ahead of rivals with perhaps flashier approach play, but less ruthlessness in turning opportunities into points.

The efficiency Inter bring isn’t flashy. It’s built on structure, discipline and the kind of winning mentality forged over recent years under successive title challenges and deep European runs.

This squad knows how to grind out results when the momentum isn’t with them, and that understanding has become a defining characteristic. Inter’s expected goals numbers closely mirror their actual returns, suggesting they are neither vastly over- nor under-performing; they are simply delivering on the chances they create and minimising damage when they don’t.

At the heart of that is a collection of seasoned professionals who know their roles and execute them with precision.

Lautaro Martinez, leading the scoring charts for the club this season, exemplifies Inter’s sharpness in transition and clinical finishing when space opens. Meanwhile, defensive veterans have marshalled a backline that, while not impermeable, concedes fewer clear chances than most of their rivals.

This mix of experience and tactical discipline makes Inter formidable in close games, where a moment of quality or concentration can decide proceedings. Some critics might point to nervy spells or occasional late concession lapses, but in Serie A where fine margins persist, those are mere blemishes on an otherwise efficient campaign.

Inter’s efficiency extends beyond results into mentality. They have shown an ability to absorb pressure and manage games intelligently, often converting early advantages into wins without unnecessary risk.

This approach takes patience and belief – qualities bred from recent seasons where Inter have consistently been in the thick of the title race and European competition – and they’ve carried them over into 2025-26 with aplomb.

In a league that often rewards style, Inter’s blunt efficiency might feel unromantic. Yet, as the calendar turns to 2026 and the title race tightens, it’s this relentless, result-oriented approach – grounded in a stellar cast of dependable performers and honed by years of competing at the sharp end – that explains why they sit above the rest.

It’s not always pretty, but in the unforgiving arithmetic of Serie A points, efficiency trumps elegance. And right now, Inter’s ruthless method is keeping them at the summit.
