Michael Duff knows Wycombe’s win over Wigan ‘wasn’t a classic’

Wycombe head coach Michael Duff described Wanderers’ 2-0 win over Wigan as ‘functional but not a classic’.

A second-minute Caolan Boyd-Munce penalty and a Cauley Woodrow header in the second period got the Chairboys back to winning ways following their defeat to Peterborough by the same scoreline three days earlier.

The Buckinghamshire side struggled to create regular clear-cut chances but defended well, which pleased Duff, as Wycombe kept their second league clean sheet of 2026.

He said: “It was functional as we looked organised, we didn’t pass the ball in difficult conditions.

“We had a really good phase of play in the first minute of the game, as it’s really good combination play.

“We score a goal, and then it’s almost as if we enter protection mode.

“It sounds like a stupid thing to say, but sometimes when you go 1-0 so early in a game, it’s difficult sometimes for the players to react to that, and I thought it took us until half-time to get a proper foothold in the game.

“It wasn’t a classic, but I don’t care because a win is a win and they are all important.”

It was a different story for Latics boss Ryan Lowe, who saw his side lose for the fifth time in eight league games.

Since taking over from Shaun Maloney in March of last year, he has managed 47 games, but has only tasted victory on 12 occasions, drawing 20, and losing 15 times.

Wigan now sit 19th in the League One table on 31 points.

Speaking at full-time, he said: “We’re just not doing enough, to be honest with you.

“A penalty in the first minute rocks the boys and rocks us all, but even that, we need to be true to ourselves and to everyone who travelled here, that it is not going well and it is not good enough.

“We know that and there is not much to say.

“The lads are a little bit down.

“We have tried to lift them, we did everything right, we travelled down on the Monday, we did the preparation right and did all the work, and there are moments in the game where you’re nearly there, but it’s nearly.

“I feel for the fans who have travelled down, I feel for the lads as they are trying, but we are not winning games of football.

“I am aware of the noise [from the fans], and I’m trying to get it away from myself and the group.

“We’re not winning games of football at the moment.”
