The Three Lions made the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and were finalists at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, with Gareth Southgate the man in charge during those tournaments. Southgate has since moved on from the England manager's post, with U21s head coach Lee Carsley currently serving as interim boss.

Sheringham believes Guardiola should be the team's next permanent manager, urging the FA to do "whatever it takes" to lure the current Manchester City boss into international football. 

"I think they should be breaking the bank and going out and getting the best," Sheringham told onlinepoker.ltd. "And for me, that man is Pep Guardiola.

"If England want to take the last step and win a major trophy, if they want to go one step further from where Gareth - who was phenomenal - has taken us, then you have to look at Pep Guardiola. Go out and have the ambition to get him, paying him whatever it takes to get involved, and, hopefully, Guardiola can take England one step further.

Guardiola is out of contract at the end of the current season, and Sheringham thinks the timing may be right for the 53-year-old to take on the reins of a national team after nearly two decades as a club manager.

"The England job might suit Pep at his age," Sheringham said. "I’m not suggesting that he will want to slow down in his life, because everything that he does is with full steam and 100% commitment, and you can tell that by the way he still motivates his players.

"It might be a perfect situation for him, and it offers him a completely new challenge: managing an international team."
