The star dethroned Teofimo Lopez as WBO light-welterweight champion with one of the most complete performances of his talents to date in New York.

Yet not content with his latest success at Madison Square Garden, the Rio 2016 medalist was quick to issue a ringside challenge to a rival - Conor Benn.

The Briton jumped between the ropes for a heated face-off, as the pair's back-and-forth suggested a potential showdown could be on the cards in 2026.

But given the difference in weight between the two men from their last fights alone, there are plenty of hoops that they would need to jump through for it.

Here, DAZN News explores the most likely pathway to a Shakur Stevenson-Conor Benn showdown - and just why it might be out of their hands for now.

A waiting game for a title shot

Let's get this out of the way first. Any prospect for a Stevenson-Benn battle almost certainly relies on a major incentive for the former to pursue the latter.

Right now, Stevenson is a quadruple-weight world champion, a star who has followed in the footsteps of Mayweather Jr., Pacquiao, Canelo and Crawford.

Benn, on the other hand, is a man without a single title to his name, a man whose biggest win came in a rematch against an aging Chris Eubank Jr. last year.

This is not to diminish the former's capacity for success - but rather, his current credentials offer little incentive beyond an impressive payday for Stevenson.

That could change in the coming months however. Benn is currently viewed as the WBC's mandatory challenger for the welterweight title held by Mario Barrios.

The latter will defend his strap in Las Vegas this month against Ryan Garcia. Both men have expressed interest in tackling Benn when the dust has settled.

After two fights at middleweight, many wondered if the Briton would have to bide his time for a first major title shot. But the waiting game may be almost over.

Prove the mettle in the middle

Whoever comes through Barrios-Garcia will be back in the ascendancy after a mixed 2025 unfolded for both men and their status among America's fighters.

Barrios retained his WBC strap against Manny Pacquiao, but came close to losing it against the aging superstar, recording a second straight draw as champion.

Garcia's plan to steal Rolly Romero's WBA strap meanwhile came crashing down as he was outgunned in Times Square last May, leading to some soul-searching.

Both men will undoubtedly be out to silence the critics when they meet - and whoever emerges with the strap will be determined to ensure they extend their reign.

For Benn, it will be arguably the toughest test of his career, even after two bouts where he vaulted a pair of divisions to challenge one of Britain's shrewdest fighters.

He will take plenty of heart from how he dominated Eubank Jr. in their second bout, of course, but the older man's clear issues in the ring make for a concession too.

Here, Benn will need to step up another level if he is to dethrone either Barrios or Garcia, with both men's off-days arguably still good enough to floor plenty of fighters.

Settle the terms and offer the carrot

Should Benn get his title shot, seize it with both hands and earn the WBC welterweight strap, he then has the carrot with which to entice Stevenson to face him.

The chance to take a title in a fifth division and further build his reputation will undoubtedly be of great interest to the American and his long-term legacy in the ring.

But Stevenson has already laid out that any bout would require a rehydration clause for him to accept, limiting how much additional weight Benn could add to his frame.

There is an irony, given that the latter arguably benefitted in kind from Eubank Jr. being restricted in additional bulk for their bouts, that he may be made to dance here too.

Benn may choose to go in a different direction of course. At welterweight, there are no shortage of contenders, domestic and international, who would want a piece of him.

Yet few bouts would arguably fill the largest venues like a clash with Stevenson, whose global reputation continues to go from strength to strength with his success too.

If the two men can make a deal work for a world title fight, then it could promise to be one of the biggest bouts of 2026 or early 2027. Only time will tell if they get there though.
